About Duncan Dogs
Duncan Dogs is family-owned and operated right here in Sumter, SC. Our goal is to serve you the best hot dogs we can.
My wife Mia has worked in the restaurant business since she was a teenager. It has always been her dream to one day have her own restaurant. Mia is a professional baker and enjoys being in the kitchen. I promised that if it possible I would help her open a restaurant.
Being retired military, it was not very practical for my wife to try to open a restaurant until we retired and settled down. Now that I am retired and our children have grown up and out on their own we can finally do it.
My wife and I have graduated from Hot Dog University in Chicago, Illinois. We have done a lot of research on hot dogs over the past two to three years prior to opening Duncan Dogs. We have traveled around South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and the Chicago area trying hot dogs from various restaurants. We have compared hot dogs and chili as well. I am always interested in hearing about new ways to make a hot dog with toppings that are new to me.
I have studied the history of hot dogs. I find it very interesting to hear new things about hot dogs and the ways people eat hot dogs around the world. The other day my mother reminded me of how much I enjoyed eating beanie weenie as a young boy.
My father and grandfather owned a neighborhood grocery store when I was in elementary school. They sold hot dogs on Fridays and Saturdays. This is where I first really got my interest in hot dogs. My father and grandfather worked in the grocery store and my great aunt Pearl ran the hot dog stand. People came from all over the county as well as outside the area for their hot dogs. They were especially busy when the hot dog stand was open. I believe they sold the hot dogs sometimes at 10 for $1.00. (1960)
This all lead to our opening up Duncan Dogs.
